I won 2 tickets for last night’s CBC Book Club radio show with Douglas Coupland and it was swee-eet!

I read and loved Generation X and City of Glass, the latter I read right before moving to Vancouver, as you do. I wish my mind was as brilliant and creative as his. Douglas Coupland can handle words with agility and subtlety both in writing and speaking which makes it very pleasurable listening to him talk away. And to top it off: he has an awesome sense of humor!

His interview was absolutely brilliant, and what a piece of cake for the interviewers! I think they only asked a couple of questions and he did the rest.

This show will be broadcast in 2 parts. The first one will be on air this Saturday and the second one the following Saturday. Listen to it if you can!

The highlights:

An elderly lady volunteered to ask the first question. She started asking him about the influence of his education on his current work. But before he could answer she revealed she was a teacher in the school he went to as a kid in West Vancouver! He recognized her straight away.

Something that won’t go in the radio broadcast: he showed how you can get ‘Fuck Off’ by scraping some letters off of ‘Starbucks Coffee’ on his cup. Brilliant.

He talked about mass media, the internet, Marshall McLuhan, generations (or rather the lack of thereof), Generation X, Generation A, the importance of bees… I could have listened to him for hours.

I bought a copy of ‘Generation A’ on the spot and got him to sign it for me. Unfortunately a book signing is what it is: one minute to say hi, I love your work thank you very much.

A little goody to give you an idea of the character:

Now if you’ll excuse me I have a book to read!
